Category A1 Rules For Motorcyclists

The rules for category a1 are applicable to those who want to operate small motorcycles. These motorcycles have a maximum cylinder power of 35 kW. They are not derived from vehicles with more than double their power.

Open category drone operations are split into three subcategories - A1 to A3. You can fly drones with the class label C0 or the A1 in the subcategory A1 (flying over people) up to January 2024.

A1

Category A1 is the first of three drone categories regulated by EASA. It is applicable to aircraft up to a maximum takeoff weight (MTOM) which is 25 kilograms. A1 applicants must have a minimum of 16 years of experience in riding two-wheeled vehicles. They must also complete compulsory basic training and pass a theory test and a practical test. Moreover, they must possess an official medical certificate.

A1 license holders are able to drive two-wheeled mopeds, as the cylinder capacity is no more than 125 cc and their power-to-weight ratio is not more than 0.1 kg/kW. They are also able to operate motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of no greater than 125cc as well as quad bikes and trikes.

Drones that have the Class Identification Label C2 may be operated under subcategory A2 when they meet the size requirements and the remote pilot has passed an additional knowledge test. This test is designed for the remote pilot to evaluate their knowledge of the technical and operation mitigations that address the additional risks of flying bigger drones (class A2, less than 4kg mass), close to people. The certificate of competence to fly Category A2 is awarded after successful completion of this test.

Due to the limited availability of certified drones in this category There are transitional arrangements that allow non-certified "legacy drones to be operated in categories A1 and A2 for two years after the new EU regulations are in the market. The drones of the past cannot be flown over the heads of people and must be operated by an A2 CofC.

To operate drones in this category, you must pass the normal online flyer ID test, and then pass an additional test in the theory department. You must also declare that you have some actual understanding of your drone and submit a written declaration of competence. The DOH is currently working on detailed guidelines to be used in category A4. These will be consistent with other procedures and will include specifics such as the number of dressing changes each day. They will be presented to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infections (IATF-EID) and the DOH National Immunization Technical Advisory Group. The IATF-EID and the DOH-National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization will be reviewing and approving these guidelines prior to their being finalized.
